Joan has tried more than 40 civil and criminal cases, including intellectual property and business disputes for science and technology companies in a range of fields including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemistry and computer science.
  
Recognized for her exceptional trial skills, Joan is frequently brought in to assist in trial preparation and trial.  Her extensive experience litigating both criminal and civil cases in the federal district courts make her the obvious choice as local and co trial counsel for firms litigating in Boston.
  
Joan has also arbitrated cases before the American Arbitration Association and has served as an arbitrator for commercial disputes. 
  
Joan previously served as a judge of the ecclesiastical trial court for the Episcopal Diocese of Boston. 
 
Joan is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
 
Representative Experience:
  • Local counsel in Federal District Court for Japanese consumer electronics company charged with patent infringement involving LED technology by prominent university.
  • Lead trial counsel in the Business Litigation section in Boston successfully defending trade secret claims on behalf of a biotech company developing novel cancer treatment.
  • Assistance on short notice in the final stages of trial preparation and conduct of jury trial in the Southern District of New York successfully defending leading contact lens manufacturer against allegations of willful deceptive advertising. 
  • Acting as local counsel in Federal District Court in Boston for global manufacturer of medical lasers and light-based technologies in two patent suits involving lasers used for hair removal and treatment of skin disorders 
  • Acting as local and joint trial counsel for a medical diagnostic company in a patent infringement jury trial involving multiple patents for pregnancy test devices resulting in purchase of company's business divisions by plaintiff 
  • Representation of an inventor of new generation cancer therapy at a seven day AAA arbitration establishing the inventor’s control over prosecution of licensed patents and the company’s obligation to commercialize the drug or risk termination of the license and return of the technology to the inventor 
  • Representation of a medical equipment manufacturer at 12 day AAA arbitration successfully defending against allegations of wrongful termination of a national distributorship agreement and recovering payment of outstanding invoices plus payment of attorneys fees and costs of arbitration.
