Joan Griffin is a Boston trial attorney with over 20 years experience trying civil and criminal cases. She has litigated intellectual property and business cases for science and technology companies and has represented criminal defendants in Federal District Court and the First Circuit Court of Appeals on a variety of matters including tax and mortgage fraud, RICO violations and narcotics trafficking.
 
Joan offers a unique combination of trial skills and experience and understanding of complex technical issues. She has the ability to identify and focus on the essential issues and explain them clearly to any decision maker. From forensics to financial transactions to medical innovations, she makes the complex simple.
 
In her criminal practice, Joan earned national recognition for bringing the first successful challenge to the scientific basis of expert ballistics evidence. She has been a popular speaker at forums nationwide on “Innovation vs. Inertia" based on her experience challenging forensic evidence. Joan has also appeared on New England Cable Network News (NECN), providing analysis of high profile cases.
 
Most recently Joan was appointed by the Court to serve on the 2013 Merit Selection Panel to recommend candidates to fill the vacancy of United States Magistrate Judge for the District of Massachusetts.
 
Joan served as a law clerk to the Honorable Rya Zobel in the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts. She received her J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1986 and her B.S., summa cum laude, in Engineering Sciences (Chemical) from Yale University in 1983.
